Welcome to the Department of Anesthesia at the Institute of Health Sciences, Wollega University. Our department is dedicated to training skilled, responsible anesthesia professionals who can provide safe, effective care for patients. We work hard to create a learning environment where students gain strong knowledge, practical clinical skills, and professional confidence.

Teaching, clinical service, and research are the core activities of our department. We closely work with our teaching hospital to ensure that students receive real clinical experience and understand the importance of patient safety and teamwork in perioperative care. We also encourage our staff and students to engage in research that helps address local health problems and improve anesthesia and critical care services in our community.

Program Admission Requirement (Eligibility)

Academic Program

  • The title for this qualification will be ‘Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Anesthesia’ in English or ‘የሳይንስ ባችለር ዲግሪ በአንስቴዝያ’ in አማርኛ.
  • Duration: 4.5 years (Nine semesters)

Achievements

Since its establishment, the department has proudly graduated two cohorts of generic undergraduate students, all of whom achieved a 100% pass rate on the national exit exam.

Currently, the program is actively training students across all levels of the undergraduate cycle, from first year through fourth year. Enrollment continues to grow steadily, reflecting increasing demand for the program and trust in its educational quality, with a total of 60. The school is staffed by 15 academic instructors and 3 clinical staff, ensuring high-quality teaching, clinical mentoring, and administrative support.

Program Learning Outcomes

After reviewing the national qualification standards (NQS) and international benchmarks, the key competencies for baccalaureate-level anesthesia graduates have been established. Eleven exit-level competencies are defined, and their interrelationships are illustrated in the competency network presented in the executive summary. Exit-Level Competencies for Bachelor of Anesthesia Graduates

  1. Assess, optimize, and prepare patients for surgery and anesthesia.
  2. Operate anesthesia machines, equipment, supplies, and monitoring devices safely and effectively.
  3. Manage patients’ airways using appropriate techniques and modalities.
  4. Provide safe intraoperative anesthesia care.
  5. Deliver safe postoperative anesthetic and recovery care.
  6. Assess and manage pain across diverse patient populations.
  7. Participate in pre-hospital, emergency, and critical care services.
  8. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) competently.
  9. Apply ethical and legal principles in anesthesia practice.
  10. Contribute to scientific evidence through research and evidence-based practice.
  11. Manage anesthesia services within healthcare facilities efficiently.

To be a leading anesthesia department in Ethiopia and Africa, shaping skilled and compassionate professionals who provide safe, high-quality perioperative care, while supporting Wollega University’s goal of becoming one of Africa’s top ten Universities of Applied Sciences by 2042.

Program Mission

Mission 1: To provide high-quality education and training that develops anesthesia professionals with strong knowledge, clinical skills, positive attitudes, and critical thinking abilities in alignment with their professional scope of practice.

Mission 2: To prepare anesthesia professionals who can deliver the full scope of safe and effective anesthesia services that meet the healthcare needs of the community.

Goal of the program
To train competent, ethical, and skilled anesthesia professionals who can provide safe and effective anesthesia care, contribute to healthcare services, and support the advancement of anesthesia practice.

 Program Educational Objectives

PEO 1. To equip anesthesia students with strong foundations in biomedical sciences, clinical practice, and public health, enabling them to provide individualized, evidence-based anesthesia care across all levels of healthcare settings, including emergency and critical care.

PEO 2. To prepare students to assess, optimize, and manage patients with co-morbidities and multiple co-existing diseases, using appropriate scientific knowledge and individualized anesthesia management plans.

PEO 3. To train students in professional communication, leadership, and management skills, fostering ethical, responsible, and collaborative practice with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.

PEO 4. To develop students’ capacity to conduct, utilize, and apply relevant research findings in anesthesia practice, while preparing them for advanced postgraduate studies and continuous professional development.

PEO 5. To enhance students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, ensuring reflective, safe, and effective practice in diverse clinical and critical care environments.
